KATOUCHA An author from Sénégal, Guinea and other countries writing in French [Return to French Page originale en français] |
Khadiatou Niane Katoucha was born in Guinea in 1960. At an early age, she was sent away to Mali. She was only reunited with her parents at the age of twelve, when her father settled in Dakar after escaping Sekou Toure's murderous regime. She lived in Senegal until her departure for Paris, aged eighteen, shortly after the birth of her first child. Katoucha soon became one of the best known supermodels and her success on the catwalk lead her to fame, fortune and an extravagant lifestyle. A victim of genital mutilation when she was nine, she lead the fight against this outdated practice in creating the association KPLCE (Katoucha's fight against excision). Katoucha passed away in 2008.
