    An author from the Rwanda
    writing in French
[Return to French — Page originale en français]

Annick Kayitesi was born in Rwanda in 1979. Her father, a doctor, died in an accident in Europe when she was a child. Her mother, slaughtered during the massacres of Tutsi people that took place in Rwanda in 1994, was a nurse. Spared from the killings, but traumatised, Annick Kayitesi took refuge in an orphanage, together with her sister, before being transferred to France where she arrived aged 15. Negotiating life in France soon proved difficult for the teenager and her road to adulthood was anything but smooth. Only upon going back to Rwanda for the second time, in order to do some research for her university degree, did she reconcile herself with both the country of her birth and her adoptive France where she lives now (2005).
