Hadja Maïmouna Nian(g) (Maï) was born in Senegal, in the Fatick Region. She has been interested in the cinema from the age of thirteen. In 1996, she gained entry to the competitive European School for Movie Scripts (Ecole Européenne du Scénario - E.E.S.) in Paris but had to relinquish her place because she was unable to secure a scholarship. This setback, however, did not diminish her enthusiasm for the Arts. In 2001, she was reading Film and African Literature at Gaston Berger's University in Saint-Louis. In 2002 she obtained a Master's Degree from the same university and, in 2002, she began her PhD studies at the University Paris 12 Val-de-Marne. She now (2005) lives in France, in the Paris Region.
