AUTOBIOGRAPHY     –     1914-1931
Karen Blixen's autobiography retraces the narrator's life in Kenya from 1914 to 1931. This best-seller depicts an outgoing, open-minded and sensitive woman. Her circle of friends reached across all races, genders and social classes and she was very keen to establish a meaningful dialogue with others. Due to a succession of bad years and, after 15 years of hard work, she was unable to meet the demands of her creditors and lost her farm to a land promoter. This book has been deservedly acclaimed as a masterpiece: it shows how intercultural relationships could have been in the colonies if raw profit, exploitation and racism had not won the day over dialogue, human values and regard for others.
