This novel was inspired by the author's memories of her upbringing in Dakar in the 1930s and 1940s. It tells the story of Aunty Lika who moves house in order to take care of her widowed brother and his children. Following the death of her brother she becomes the principal of the family home and has children of her own. The lives of the family members and their friends run across the novel and recount children growing up, collecting seafood along the beach, learning professions and trades, getting married, having children of their own and, for the unfortunate elder brother and some of his friends, going to war for France.
