    At twentythree years of age, Stéphanie de La Gorce decided to leave France in order to see the world. For two years (between 2002 and 2004) she worked as a teacher in Conakry, Guinea, on a voluntary basis. Throughout her stay in this West African city she set out to discover and learn about the country's inhabitants, customs and difficulties. She investigates various cultural issues that she finds puzzling, unsettling, or even shocking to the European woman which she remains. Upon her return to France, she engaged in journalism.
