CORRESPONDENCE     –     1895-1901
Isabelle Eberhardt was born in 1877 in Geneva, five years after her mother had left Saint-Petersburg. In 1897, Isabelle Eberhardt moved to Algeria and converted to Islam. An eventful life followed, for her gift for writing was matched only by her taste for what one may call 'investigative journalism'. Often wearing male clothes in order to move about more freely, she was able to offer a unique take on Maghrebian society. Ecrits intimes proposes a wide selection of Isabelle Eberhardt's abundant correspondence with her brother Augustin de Moerder, penfriend Ali Abdul Wahab, future husband Slimène Ehnni, et al. Isabelle Eberhardt died in Algeria in 1904 following flash-flooding that destroyed her house in Aïnt-Sefra.
