In 1948, Christine Garnier left for Monrovia in order to interview people who had found refuge there at the end of the war. Her book Tired heroes deals with the men and women she met : Naatje, the Dutch women who survived her internment in Japanese concentration camps and who later fought with Soekarno's Nationalists; Verbergh, the Belgian professor ; Agnès, the French aviator who had been a test-pilot for Messerschmitt; Argulov, the Russian; Werner, the German man whose boat was shipwrecked nearby; G., the French escapee from Dakar's prison; and many other regulars at the Hôtel des Etrangers who joined in in applauding the flamenco displays offered by the local Spanish hairdresser. The second part of the book deals with the narrator's travels inside the country. A movie by Yves Ciampi was inspired by Christine Garnier's narrative.
