Published in 1928, this novel exposes the difficulties of inter-racial marriage in France in the 1920s. A Frenchman of Peul origin falls in love with a
middle class French women and marries her. He holds an important position in The Ministry for the Colonies, in
Paris, but his self confidence is seriously tested by the widespread
racism that permeates every strata of French society. The first few weeks of
matrimony is sheer bliss but the honeymoon comes to an abrupt end when the
couple tries to re-enter social life. Good manners, wealth and professional
achievement do not shield the young couple from others' disparaging remarks and
attitudes. The taunts, abuse and mockery of which they are victims, wherever
they go together, become increasingly unbearable for the young woman and the
couple begins to disintegrate...
