AUTOBIOGRAPHY 1938-1958 |
This autobiography, written by a Camerounian teenager in the mid 1950s, can be considered as one of the first books published in French by an African woman. A string of short chapters sets forth the significant events of the author's life. These include memories of her childhood and family ties, her school's achievements, the proud moment of her admission to Douala's College, her interest in creative writing and English lessons. She also alludes to the delicate relationship she develops with those girls who never left their village and who called her names; she also ponders over the elders' wisdom, marriage and the "duties" of African women.
