In the middle of the 1860s, two children growing up in a remote South-African farm try to make sense of the surrounding world. The rough treatment they suffer at the hands of tyranical guardians doesn't prevent them dreaming of a better future for themselves. As they grow into adulthood, they take charge of their own destiny and attempt to follow their dream. This masterpiece is one of the first African novels by a female African author. It deliberatly eschews exoticism and colonial cliches to address people's deepest preoccupations with the meaning of life and their own place in the world. |
