PERSONAL HISTORY 1923-1924 |
When Gabrielle Vassal's husband was appointed Head of Health Services for Equatorial French Africa (A.E.F.), she followed him to Brazzaville where the couple found poor accommodation but a lush vegetation which was soon transformed into a magnificent garden. Taking every opportunity to accompany her husband to remote locations, she wrote a personal (but sanitized and politically correct) account of the Colony, including its railway, "factories", missions, hunting expeditions, pests, immunisation programmes, race relations, customs, etc.
