PERSONAL HISTORY     –     1923-1935
In the early 1930s, Vivienne de Watteville, (born in 1900) returned to East Africa where her father had been killed by a lion during a previous expedition in 1923. Of a solitary nature, she first spent time in the countryside, observing the elephants and other wildlife. She then decided to live for a while on the slopes of Mont Kenya, on her own, in a little cabin located well above the 10 000 foot level. An intrepid and indefatigable walker, she cherished exploring the surrounding peaks and valleys, most of the time alone, trekking through rough terrain and marvelling at the discovery of small rivers, waterfalls and mountain lakes. Alone but never lonely, her harsh living conditions become instrumental in the success of her soul-searching experience and understanding of the world.
