Valérie Roullard (pen name Rosemonde Ahou de Saintange) was born in France in 1934 and arrived in Côte d'Ivoire in 1961. She spent some 30 years in this country and ran an industrial bakery in the city of Aboisso with her husband. Back in France after they retired from business, Valérie Roullard continued to write about Africa. With regard to her pseudonym, she said in the early 1990s : "Rosemonde is the name which I used to sign my drawings when I was a child; Ahou means Thursday in the language spoken in the region of Côte d'Ivoire where I lived and I was born on a Thursday; de Saintange is a name I fancy and, like my married name, it starts with the letter S"
