Henriette Akofa was born in 1979 in Sokodé, Togo. She grew up in a large polygamous family. In January 1994 an acquaintance of her father offered to take her to Paris and to send her to school, however, once in France Henriette was not sent to school but to work. Moving to the service of another family did not improve Henriette's conditions and it was only when she was rescued after many years by the Committee against Modern Slavery that she eventually regained her freedom and furthered her education in France. In 2003, she became a nursing aid for the elderly and now (2003) works part-time in a hospital. (From an interview by H. Mbouguen published in Grio.com 2003.)
