Assamala Amoi was born in Paris in 1960, and lived in France with her parents until 1966. Upon her return to the Southern part of the Ivory Coast, she attended primary school, high school and finally the University of Abidjan, where she graduated with a Masters in English Literature, a DEA and eventually a Translator Certificate (French-English).
In the early 1990s she taught English in Abidjan. In 1993, she took part in Iowa's International Writing Program. Later she worked as a Communications Officer for the UN (FNUAP). In the late 1990s, she worked in the fields of Management and Communication for the Bureau Régional pour l'Afrique du Programme de Gestion Urbaine (a PNDU program) and was transferred to Harare in 2000. From December 2000, she has worked for the World Health Organisation and currently resides in Brazzaville (2010).
Her daughter, born on the 1st of January 1990, passed away in May 2002, aged only twelve. À Ornella: un poème d'Assamala Amoi en souvenir de sa fille.

The title "Impasse", that of the first short story in a collection of eight, could equally apply to the other seven texts. The latter stories, like the first one, demonstrate how the behaviour or attitude of the characters involved causes them to be faced with all sorts of difficulties, resulting in an impasse.
