It is in this context that women writers have emerged and are flourishing. An overall view of the situation of women writers in Côte d'Ivoire shows that there has been an obvious evolution from the mid-70s to the present time. This evolution is characterised by: * The growing number of women writers whose work is published * The variety of this work in terms of literary genre and themes * The diversity of the social and political environments The situation of women writers in Côte d'Ivoire is paradoxical in the sense that although they constitute a minority of the total number of writers they have not created a separate association for themselves but they hold key positions in the Executive Bureau of the WACI. This organisation, created in 1987 saw its first woman president (Tanella Boni, philosopher, poet and novelist) democratically elected in 1991. In 1997 the second and present woman president, (Josette Abondio, novelist, former unionist, play actress and fashion designer), took over. Despite a predominance of male authors, every time a woman writer's book is published it gets press coverage in the major and minor newspapers of the country. |
