Because of the nature of the environment in which women have been and are still evolving, they have to face many challenges:

    * to breathe life into their young voices so as to be heard among male writers and foreign winds

    * to turn themselves into creative and organised Shivas to lead concurrent family, professional and social lives

    * to be part and parcel of the living literary history of Côte d'Ivoire and Africa by being studied in academic programmes

    * to widen their scope of readership beyond geographical boundaries and language barriers.

In order to address the situation of women writers in Côte d'Ivoire in a more specific manner I have identified three phases in the following chronological order :

    Past I : from 1976 to 1985 : the pioneer era
Past II : from 1986 to 1995 : more new voices
Present : from 1995 to 2000 and onwards : taking on the future and the world
