Jacqueline Fatima Bocoum lives in Senegal. In the foreword to her first novel, she says that her father was "a typical product of erstwhile Senegalese territorial administration under Senghor ... imbued with its structure and command system as one might be with religion. With his rigid manner, he ran his home and family like a government department" (p.7). Nevertheless, Jacqueline Bocoum adds, "I always maintained a quiet admiration for him" (p.9). As for her mother, Jacqueline says, she remained the archetype of children's tales: calm and reflective, she just lead her life and wanted to be nothing other than a simple wife, guardian of her home and family. And, as the young Jacqueline concedes, "I am still unable to be without her sweet presence and the soothing glance that characterised her throughout the bustle of our lives". (Interview, Le Quotidien, www.seneweb.com, 26 January 2006).
