Madeleine Mukamuganga was born in Kibuye, Rwanda, in 1958. Her name means, literally, "Mrs Doctor". It was the name given to her because her mother had to be transported to the maternity hospital where Madeleine was born. Madeleine Mukamuganga attended school in the city of Muramba. She later learned secretarial work at Nyundo and worked as a secretary and translator in various places, including Kigali, where she was employed by a French optometrist. She fled Kigali in 1994 in an harrowing escape, found temporary refuge in Congo, Kenya, Cameroun and eventually France where she now lives (2005) with her family. (Autobiography and Editions Cultures Croisées, 2005).
