    Colette Samoya Kirura was born in 1952 in Nyakirwa, Burundi. At that time the education of girls was not encouraged; however, she completed her studies in 1975, gaining a University Degree in History and Geography. She then involved herself in the struggle for the rights for the women of Burundi, taking the battle to the many political institutions and right to the parliamentarians. Colette Samoya Kirura was appointed Permanent Ambassador to the UN in Geneva in February 1992, becoming the first Burundi women to gain this prestigous post. She still lives in Geneva (2002) where she is a now consultant responsible for projects within Non-Governmental Organisations.
