Oumou Ahmar Traoré Cissé was born in Mali. She belongs to the Sarakole's ethnic group. After graduating from Paris VIII University with a degree in Gender Studies, she gained further qualifications from the National School of Administration in Algiers and the International Institute of Journalism in Berlin. She worked for UNESCO and the Ministry for the Advancement of Women
Children and the Family in Bamako. Mrs Cissé also worked as a journalist. Her life in the village, understanding of students' milieu and experience of life in France, where her husband was a diplomat, provided the backgound information needed to write her first novel Mamou, épouse
et mère d'ÉMIGRÉS [Mamou, wife and mother of emigrants].
