Chantal Umutesi was born in 1973 in the region of
Butare, Rwanda. Her mother was a primary school teacher and her father a small
businessman and farmer dealing in coffee production and agricultural products
and supplies. Aged twenty, she became pregnant, but before her baby was born, the
1994 civil war started and the father of her child disappeared. Four years of
extreme hardship followed during which time her baby girl, her brother and her
parents were killed. Following her marriage to a Frenchman working in the
Congo, she moved with him to Saint-Malo, France, where she now lives. (2005).
