Chantal UMUTESI

    Chantal Umutesi was born in 1973 in the region of Butare, Rwanda. Her mother was a primary school teacher and her father a small businessman and farmer dealing in coffee production and agricultural products and supplies. Aged twenty, she became pregnant, but before her baby was born, the 1994 civil war started and the father of her child disappeared. Four years of extreme hardship followed during which time her baby girl, her brother and her parents were killed. Following her marriage to a Frenchman working in the Congo, she moved with him to Saint-Malo, France, where she now lives. (2005).
